Lost without Internet

It’s amazing how helpless I feel with cut off from the Internet. When I came home, my connection was not working because of the router. The red light was on at DIAG. Also, the router seemed kind of hot. This has happened before, but pressing the reset button with a paperclip didn’t do anything this time. Tried restarting the computer and that didn’t do anything either. Finally, put the computer to sleep, then unplugged the router for a few seconds. Plugged it back in. The red light did not stay on this time. I awoke the computer, launched Netscape, and was connected. Phew!

Real Audio

Discovered this week how nice Real Audio sounds on my G4 in OSX. The only catch is, Real’s website says that this audio player won’t be free after two weeks. I had to give a credit card number in order to even download it, and they will automatically start charging me 9.95 per month for that. Not fair, since OSX seems to be the only platform for which there’s not a free, basic player. My only hope is that if I don’t register the player, they won’t charge me. The registration pitch says something about being able to use premium features if I register, so maybe that’s the way to get it not to charge me. But if it does start charging, is it worth 9.95 per month to me? Well, it lets me catch up on NPR and WBEZ programs that I can’t listen to during the day. But is that worth 10 bucks per month? There are so many of these “little” things you can get that start to add up.
